The engine is the automobile's source of power. it is a complex device with hundreds of moving parts supported by a number of complicated system.
The modern automobile internal combustion engine coverts energy contained in fuel into efficient,  inexpensive transportation.
during the history time of automobiles, hundreds of differentengine designs have been invented,build and tested each type of engine layout has certain 
Advantage and drawbacks, but today one few design are in wide use like;

1: piston

3: cylinder
4: valve (inlay valve & outlay valve)

     Cylinder arrangement
1: V shape arrangement of cylinder; that is when the cylinder block is cast in the shape of a V there are two row of cylinders. piston from both row or banks are connected to one crankshaft in both bottom of the V.  any even number of cylinder is possible in the design.below is picture of V shape cylinder

2: In-line arrangement of cylinder; mean that the cylinder are placed in row. they may be placed in straight up and down or stand in order to lower the engine's height.










3: Opposed cylinder arrangement; when the engine must fit in a small compartment at the rear of the car, an opposed of a flat design is often used two rows of cylinder are opposite each other on a  flat plane. two of piston are connected to a single crankshaft  located between them.
